The Vehicle
Registration OE66ERZ - a Mineral Grey F80 M3 Competition - had been circulating between traders, appearing on eBay at £23,000 and on Instagram at £26,995, described as a "rare sunroof model" with just 26,000 miles. On the face of it, a desirable car.
Looks nice, doesn't it?
What Raised Suspicion
The MOT history immediately raised questions. A gap from November 2019 to February 2025 showed just 1,265 miles added over a five-year period - an implausibly low figure for a car supposedly covering normal use.
Examining the advertised photos revealed a number of factory options clearly visible on the car. But it also revealed several options that were conspicuously absent.
That is still a reasonable set of options for an F80 M3 Competition. The problem is it bore no resemblance to the factory specification for this vehicle, VIN: WBS8M920X05G48100.
The Investigation
Running the VIN against factory records made the situation clear. The car being advertised as OE66ERZ did not match the specification that left the factory on that VIN. The conclusion was unavoidable - this was a clone.
Table 1 - OE66ERZ as advertised vs genuine factory specification for OE66ERZ
| Option | Advertised car | Match | Genuine OE66ERZ factory spec |

With the clone confirmed, the question became: where is the real OE66ERZ?
MOT records showed the genuine car had its last UK test in November 2019 at 23,880 miles. BMW service records then told the rest of the story - the car was subsequently exported to Cyprus, where it was serviced in November 2020 on 27,634 miles. And it's still there, with a most recent recorded mileage of 67,363km (41,867 miles). That figure alone exposes the advertised "26,000 miles" as fiction.
Crucially, no export marker had been recorded against the registration at the DVLA - leaving the identity of OE66ERZ available to be stolen and placed onto another vehicle.
Identifying the Clone
Having recently catalogued the full details of all F8x M3s and M4s, narrowing down the candidates became a structured process rather than guesswork.
Of all UK F80 M3s produced in Mineral Grey, only 28 came with the sunroof option. Filtering for the DCT gearbox reduced that number to 24. Adding the Black Merino Extended interior left just 6 potential candidates.
Stolen markers had already been checked against all 28 Mineral Grey sunroof cars - three showed as stolen, but none matched closely enough on factory options. Only one emerged as a credible match:
- Registration: AP16FDY
- VIN: WBS8M920305E21833

AP16FDY carries no stolen marker, but fellow investigator Smuler, of M3Cutters, set to work researching its history - it had been written off as CAT S in April 2024, and written off again as CAT B on 20 August 2024. Despite being deemed scrapped and crushed by the DVLA, it gained a new registered keeper on that same date and was sold through a salvage auction on 11 September 2024.
On 21 August 2024 - one day after AP16FDY changed hands - a new V5 was issued for OE66ERZ. The last V5 date recorded for both cars is 21 August 2024.
Those viewing the advertised car had noted bonnet misalignment and damage consistent with the collision AP16FDY suffered. Further cosmetic similarities between the two cars include crease marks on the seats and driver's headrest, an M Performance steering wheel with the blue centre stripe wrapped to the top, and additional non-OEM carbon trim pieces. AP16FDY's last recorded MOT mileage was over 90,000 miles - which goes some way to explaining the condition of the interior in the car being advertised at "26,000 miles."
On the balance of all the evidence, the car being advertised as OE66ERZ was, in all likelihood, the written-off AP16FDY.
The Conclusion
A Mineral Grey F80 M3 Competition was being actively traded across multiple platforms under a stolen identity. The genuine OE66ERZ is living out its days in Cyprus with over 41,000 miles on the clock. What was being sold in its place appears to be a heavily crashed and written-off car, flagged as scrapped and crushed by the DVLA, presenting false mileage, a false identity, and a false history to every prospective buyer.
Key Lessons for Buyers
- A standard vehicle history check will not identify a clone - the registration and VIN will appear clean because they belong to a legitimate car
- Always verify that the factory specification matches the car in front of you - options like Surround View, Head-up Display, and LED headlights are not things owners typically remove
- Low mileage combined with a long MOT gap deserves close scrutiny - 1,265 miles over five years is not credible for a car in normal use
- Export records are not always marked at the DVLA - a car that has left the UK can still have its identity stolen and reused
- If a car is being passed between traders rapidly, ask why
An MDataWorks Vehicle Report Would Have Helped Here
The factory specification for OE66ERZ is documented in full - every option listed, including those present and those absent. A buyer running a report before viewing would have seen immediately that the genuine car left the factory with Adaptive LED headlights, Surround View cameras, Head-up Display, and Full leather trim - none of which were on the car being sold. The BMW service history showing the export to Cyprus, with a current mileage of over 41,000 miles, is also captured in the report - making the advertised 26,000 miles impossible to sustain.
- Full factory specification listed - options present and absent clearly identified
- Service history captured - including export and overseas mileage records
